Here’s What You Need to Know About Tonsil Stones

What Are Tonsil Stones?
Tonsil stones, also known as tonsilloliths, are small, hard lumps that form in the crevices of the tonsils. These stones are made up of debris such as dead cells, mucus, food particles, and bacteria that get trapped and harden over time. They often appear white or yellow and can vary in size from a grain of rice to a grape.

Common Symptoms
Many people with tonsil stones may not notice any symptoms, but larger stones can cause discomfort. Common signs include bad breath (halitosis), a sore throat, difficulty swallowing, and a persistent cough. In some cases, you might feel like there’s something stuck in your throat or notice white spots on your tonsils.

Causes and Risk Factors
Tonsil stones are more likely to occur in people who experience chronic tonsillitis or have large tonsil crypts (deep folds or pockets). Poor oral hygiene, sinus issues, and frequent throat infections can also increase the risk. Keeping your mouth clean and staying hydrated are key to preventing buildup in the tonsils.

Treatment and Prevention
Most tonsil stones are harmless and may go away on their own. For mild cases, gargling with salt water or using a water flosser can help dislodge them. If the stones are painful or recurring, a doctor may recommend professional removal or even tonsillectomy in severe cases. Maintaining good oral hygiene and regular dental checkups can help keep tonsil stones from forming.
